The Republic of Vanuatu is an island nation in the South Pacific Ocean. Fiji sits to the East, and Northern Australia due West. Vanuatu is comprised of over 80 islands, with about 65 being inhabited.
There are several active volcanoes throughout the country, including many underwater.
The country was jointly managed by the French and the British and was known as the New Hebrides. In 1980, after an independence movement, the Republic of Vanuatu got political freedom.
Vanuatu is 15 hours ahead of East Coast Time.
The national language of Vanuatu is Bislama, a creole language evolved from English. English and French are also spoken, depending on where in the country you are from. There are also over 100 local languages spoken in various villages/islands. Vanuatu is considered to be the country with the highest density of languages per capita in the world.
